Although l-lysine occurs naturally in foods, the FDA has not approved the amino acid supplement for treatment of any specific diseases or illnesses.

Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should consult a doctor. If you are taking any other medications (including antibiotics), talk to your doctor or pharmacist to ensure that there are no interactions between medications. Because this drug is process in the liver, be sure to talk to your healthcare provider before taking supplemental doses of l-lysine.

Good sources of lysine are high-protein foods such as eggs, meat (specifically red meat, lamb, pork, and poultry), soy, beans and peas, cheese (particularly Parmesan), and certain fish (such as cod and sardines).
